The trumpet is a musical instrument with the highest register in the brass family. Trumpets are among the oldest musical instruments, dating back to at least 1500 BC. They are constructed of brass tubing bent twice into an oblong shape, and are played by blowing air through closed lips, producing a “buzzing” sound which starts a standing wave vibration in the air column inside the trumpet.

The trumpet is one of the most popular instruments that students start to play when taking a band class at school. Many people think that trumpets are very easy to play since all it seems to consist of is a mouthpiece, horn, and three valves. Trumpets sound easy to plant, don’t they? However, as anyone who has picked one up can tell you, playing it is anything but simple.

Trumpets are considered a soprano brass instrument and it has all but eclipsed its similar counterpart — the cornet. The cornet’s sound is controlled while the trumpet is much livelier.

Many years ago, the trumpet was typically used as a signal instrument. Everyone can remember the movies that show one signaling the beginning of a battle. These days however, it is considered one of the loveliest instruments in the band.
